Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is a natural molecule, forming a gel in all connective tissue. The body manufactures around 5 g a day, thanks to specialized cells called fibroblasts.

In the skin, it gives the dermis its shape and thickness.

It also plays a trophic role, capturing water molecules up to 1,000 times its own weight, like a molecular sponge.

With age, its production diminishes and volumes deepen: this is the formation of static wrinkles and the hollowing of the oval of the face or volumes (dark circles, temples...).

Dr Santini offers hyaluronic acid injections for three main indications:

• trophic effect, to nourish the skin and enhance its radiance and function. It can be used preventively, as in Universkin premium cosmetics, or injected, as in Skinbooster mesotherapy.
• filling effect, to remove static wrinkles such as the nasolabial fold, tone the oval of the face or plump up the hands;

As a natural product, hyaluronic acid is always eventually reabsorbed, on average after 12 to 24 months. Hyaluronic acid injections should then be repeated.

We talk about hyaluronic acid, but there are actually different types depending on their molecular weight and degree of cross-linking.

The larger and more cross-linked the hyaluronic acid, the more cohesive and volumizing it is, with slower resorption. The art of a successful hyaluronic acid injection lies in choosing the right galenic formulation, depending on the desired volumizing effect.

There are few contraindications, as hyaluronic acid is a natural product. Dr Santini prefers naturally produced, vegan hyaluronic acid.

As a precaution, these injections are not recommended for pregnant or breast-feeding women. Care must also be taken in cases of autoimmune disease or skin lesions. To limit the risk of bleeding at injection sites, anti-coagulants should be discontinued for 8 days before and 5 days after the injections.

As this treatment does not require general anesthesia, it is not necessary to fast during the hours preceding the injections. To ensure optimal results, it is advisable to avoid exposure to the sun, as well as the consumption of alcohol in the hours beforehand. In addition, to comply with aseptic conditions, make-up should be carefully removed.

Depending on patients and their sensitivity to pain, Dr. Santini may prescribe the application of an anaesthetic ointment such as EMLA®, sold in pharmacies. This should be applied about an hour before the injections are due to start, so that you feel nothing.

It may be advisable to take a prescribed homeopathic treatment 3 days before the session, to limit the inflammatory reaction associated with the small injections.

For 2 days following hyaluronic acid injections, the treated areas should not be massaged, and intense sports should be avoided.

We also advise against intense sun exposure, saunas and steam baths for around 2 weeks, to avoid congestion of the skin.

The after-effects of hyaluronic acid injections are mild and painless, with only occasional bruising or swelling. So there's no need to avoid social life. Make-up can be applied after 24 hours.

You may feel some induration or reduced sensitivity for two weeks, but there's nothing to worry about.

The effect is immediately visible, but you'll need to wait 10 to 15 days for the effect to stabilize.

If necessary, a touch-up can be carried out between 2 and 4 weeks.

The duration of treatment ranges from 1 to 2 years, depending on the specific characteristics of each patient and the type of hyaluronic acid used (viscosity, volume, degree of cross-linking, etc.).
