Correction of dark circles with hyaluronic acid injections

Anatomically, dark circles correspond to the natural furrows that form under the eyes, at the level of the orbital rim. They can be more or less pronounced, extending to the root of the nose and into the valley of tears.

There are several types of dark circles, with different origins:

• Hollow circles are caused by the melting of fatty tissue under the eyes, and the loss of hyaluronic acid in the dermis. The skin loses its contours and tone, which can also lead to the formation of bags under the eyes. As the skin of the eyelids is very thin, it reveals the edges of the bone and the purplish sheen of the veins.
• Dark circles are due to the presence of pigments, tending towards a bluish, purplish, brown or even red color.

Their treatment is possible through aesthetic medicine.

Bringing volume back to dark circles will have several effects: it will fill in hollow circles, refreshing the eyes and making them brighter.

Dr Santini offers two methods of filling dark circles in Paris, either through minimally invasive surgery (lipostructure or lipofilling) or aesthetic medicine (injection of hyaluronic acid for dark circles).

The disadvantage of lipostructure (or injection of the patient's own fat) for dark circles is that it is a genuine surgical procedure, which is why many patients prefer medical filling with hyaluronic acid.

Injected hyaluronic acid is perfectly tolerated, 100% biodegradable and gradually resorbs within a year, so it can be renewed if you wish.

An initial consultation enables Dr Santini to fully understand your expectations and verify the indications. There are few contraindications to the use of hyaluronic acid fillers, although these injections are not suitable for pregnant or breast-feeding women, for example. Precautions must also be taken in the case of autoimmune diseases. Finally, if an infection is detected at the injection sites, the injections cannot be carried out.

As this is a medical treatment, it is not necessary to fast during the hours preceding the injections. Nevertheless, to preserve optimal skin quality, it is advisable to avoid exposure to the sun, as well as the consumption of alcohol a few hours beforehand. In addition, to respect aseptic conditions, make-up should be carefully removed.

Depending on the patient and his or her sensitivity to pain, Dr. Santini may prescribe the application of an EMLA-type anesthetic cream, available in pharmacies. It should be applied one hour before the injections are due to start. This cream is totally invisible, so comfort during the session is enhanced for a pain-free dark circles injection.

To limit possible bleeding at the injection site, you should refrain from taking any medication containing aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs for 8 days before and 5 days after the injections.

It is also possible to take a prescribed homeopathic treatment 3 days before the session. This treatment also reduces the risk of post-injection oedema or erythema.

The procedure for filling dark circles with hyaluronic acid must be very precise, and requires real expertise to avoid over-correction or a Tyndall effect (bluish effect).

A controlled quantity of hyaluronic acid is injected into the deep dermis, close to the orbital rim, to obtain a natural contour without a transparent effect.

The hyaluronic acid will restore the missing volume, and the hollow will fade. It is important not to overcorrect to avoid an over-inflated result.

In some cases, Dr. Santini may suggest a two-stage procedure, with a second touch-up session at least 15 days after the first. This touch-up will perfect the result, with a rejuvenated look and naturally filled-in dark circles.

For two hours after the injections, we recommend that you refrain from strenuous exercise. You should also avoid massaging the treated areas for 48 hours.

Intense sun exposure, saunas and steam baths are strongly discouraged for 2 weeks following the injection. However, you can resume normal activity after the injections.

The after-effects of these injections are straightforward. A few slightly swollen marks may remain for 20 to 30 minutes, then disappear.

In rare cases, small bruises may also appear, which fade in a few days: they can be hidden under make-up after 24 hours.

The effect lasts approximately 12 to 18 months, with brighter, more luminous, less tired eyes.
