The lion's wrinkle, or glabellar wrinkle, corresponds to the set of small vertical wrinkles forming in the inter-brow area, above the nose.

It is mainly due to hyper-contraction of the corrugator muscle, a narrow oblique muscle located deep under the forehead muscle, just above the head of the eyebrows.

This excessive contraction occurs as the skin and skin muscle lose their elasticity, with the lion's wrinkle having two main consequences:

• aesthetic consequences, with an ageing effect on the upper third of the face and eyes;
• consequences on expression, with the development of negative expressions such as harshness or concern. Glabellar wrinkles can thus induce a real discrepancy between what we involuntarily express, and what we really are deep down inside. The botulinum toxin BTX-A blocks the neuromediator (acetylcholine) that enables muscles to contract: as muscle fibers no longer receive nerve impulses, they relax, resulting in a myorelaxant effect. This smoothing action is progressive (the time it takes for acetylcholine receptors to become saturated, i.e. 4 to 10 days) and transient (botulinum toxin is broken down after around 6 months).
